Subject JSP Precompile Problems
Date Tue, 31 Aug 2004 01:42:46 GMT
Running JspC as an Ant task in Tomcat 5.0 and it appears to be loading JSPs as part of the
compilation process. This is problematic when a usebean constructor or static initializer
attempts to use a service not available.

Let's say you you have a usebean whose constructor makes a database call. The datasource is
loaded in the J2EE container but it is not available to Ant when running the JspC task. Likewise,
attempting to get an object from the JNDI service will fail.

It was a chore to refactor the code to support the new JspC but what made matters worse was
that, within Ant anyway, there was no indication of what page failed when this particular
problem occurs. I want to use the 5.0 JspC to run under 5.0 but 4.0 looks more stable.
