Yes, the HTTP Mapper has been completely re-written. The mapping occurs 
*before* entering the pipeline (valve) instead of *after* in Tomcat 4. 
You may want to try a re-direct instead. Something like:

if ( bla bla)
                hresponse.sendRedirect(
                        hresponse.encodeRedirectURL("/"));
