May setting these values will help:

ulimit -s 2048
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5

Either put them in the environment of the user that starts tomcat
or put it in the startscript of tomcat.

BTW: Have you looked what processes are running and
how the memory usage is, before you try to start tomcat ?
(Maybe there is some other process missbehaving)
