Lastly!

Whatever you do DO NOT call con.getContentLength in jdk 1.1.7+ it will cause
you a lot of headaches!

      con = url.openConnection();
      con.setDoInput(true);
      con.setDoOutput(true);
      con.setUseCaches(false);
      con.setRequestProperty("Content-Type",
"application/x-java-serialized-object");
      httpmessage.sendHeaders(con);
      out = new ObjectOutputStream(new
BufferedOutputStream(con.getOutputStream()));
      // out.getContentLength();  <--- will cause headaches for applet and
servlet
