What about using JavaScript :

alert(document.referrer); // Displays the URL of the location that referred
the user to the current page.

how about 
getRequestURI()?
Shouldn't it give the uri of the original request?

(BTW: Tomcat has to store the original uri somewhere, otherwise it couldn'tr
 edirect later. Maybe a request attribute?)
