I'm coming into this late, but when I've had problems that sound similar
to what you're describing I did the following:

	1) stop tomcat
	2) delete everything from the working directory
	3) start tomcat

Also, check your permissions on the directories.  The working folder
needs to be writable by the user that tomcat runs as.  Since you're
trying to verify that things are really, really broken I'd change the
permissions to 777 on the working folder (chmod 0777
$TOMCAT_HOME/<whatever the folder is, I don't remember of hand>).

Another thing to check is to be sure that you don't have old or broken
code in your classpath prior to what you're trying to debug.  That will
also cause problems.
