Guess I'll never stop learning. Looking at it again, I probably assumed that
the "/" path would handle the default web application for the host. This is
why things miraculously started working after I defined a context with the
"" path and the right docBase.

We should modify the above docs, as they can mislead people like they
misled you.  You don't have to explicitly define this context: tomcat
will implicitly define it for you if you don't explicitly define it.
