yes, you can run tomcat, by opening command promt, (by going into start->run-> cmd).
then you need to change directory to tomcat/bin/
there you can run tomcat on command :

catalina run

and tomcat will start, and this command window will not dissapeare when tomcat crashes.

Also you can always read the logs.
