Why aren`t you using the jdk1.3.1 for freeBSD ?
Would you like to try mine (mod_jk) ?

here`s my worker.properties
workers.tomcat_home=$CATALINA_HOME
workers.java_home=$JAVA_HOME
ps=/
worker.list=ajp12, ajp13
worker.ajp13.port8009
worker.ajp13.host=localhost
worker.ajp13.type=ajp13

Added to httpd.conf
#################################################################

LoadModule jk_module          libexec/apache/mod_jk.so

AddModule mod_jk.c

<IfModule mod_jk.c>
    JkWorkersFile /usr/local/tomcat/conf/workers.properties
    JkLogFile  logs/jk.log
    JkLogLevel warn
    JkMount /*.jsp ajp13
    JkMount /servlet/* ajp13
    JkMount /examples/* ajp13

</IfModule>

##########################################
