This is true.  However, even with BASIC you can influence the contents of
the pop-up dialog box by using the <realm-name> element in web.xml:

  <login-config>
    <auth-method>BASIC</auth-method>
    <realm-name>My Cool Application</realm-name>
  </login-config>

The phrase "My Cool Application" will show up in the dialog box, so the
user knows what they are logging on to.
