I'm not really familiar with Linux or the ps command.
Could you give a short description of what this does:

ps -aux --cols 500 |grep $TOMCAT_HOME

ps aux <--- BSD options. You'll want "ef" for
SysV variants like Linux.

I KNOW, Linux isn't a sys V kernel, but the ports,
like ps seem to be.
