Edit startup.bat and change the command after ":start" to
"call %TOMCAT_HOME%\bin\tomcat run %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9"
i.e. replace "start" by "run"

Tomcat will now run in the same window, enabling you to read the error
messages.
