hi
If u r using apache + tomcat then u can set the 
DirectoryIndex attribute in httpd.conf to use the index.jsp file..
If u have tomcat in the stand alone mode then u can use the welcomefile
element in the web.xml file.. Look into the examples application
web.xml file for more details
