The other thing you can do is specify the path like this:

My tomcat is installed here:

C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Jakarta\Tomcat

I wrote my TOMCAT_HOME environment var like this:

C:\Progra~1\Apache~1\Jakarta\Tomcat

You can do the same in other places where you refer to a path with spaces.

No quotes needed.

Another simple problem here is when you install Tomcat into a directory with
spaces in the name ie. "C:\Program Files\jakarta-tomcat" You need quotes
are around the paths or install into a directory path without spaces.

Check out the file $TOMCAT/conf/server.xml to see if your
/examples directory is specified as

<Context path="/examples"
         docBase="webapps/examples"
         debug="0"
         reloadable="true" >
</Context>

Or did you have permission to the
directory where you start tomcat?

Hope this helps.

Hello, every guru,

I installed the Tomcat 3.1 and configured it following the instructions. I
try to run the tomcat examples, by typing http://localhost:8080/examples,
but it always gives the error

Error: 500
Location: /examples
Internal Servlet Error:
java.lang.NullPointerException

org.apache.tomcat.servlets.DefaultServlet.serveFile(DefaultServlet.java:301)

org.apache.tomcat.service.TcpConnectionThread.run(SimpleTcpEndpoint.java:338
)
	at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:484)

I checked server.xml and the default web.xml.  Everything are OK.  I didn't
change anything in both files. But why this error comes up? Can any guru
point me to the right direction. Thank you very much.

JW.
