I have been tracing where our problem comes from and it is now looking as 
if it may be a database/jdbc issue:

I'm getting an erratic "SQLException: the query returned no data" from the 
jdbc2.executeQuery method.

I'm using Postgres 7.02 & the jdbc driver.
