You should be able to use Tomcat itself fairly easily. Two general approaches are common:

    * Have your embedded application call the main() method of the startup class
      (org.apache.tomcat.startup.Tomcat for Tomcat 3.x, org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina

for Tomcat 4.0) just like the shell script does. This lets you configure things from

server.xml if your app has the notion of a filesystem.

    * Use the startup class designed for embedded use
      (org.apache.tomcat.startup.EmbededTomcat for Tomcat 3.x,
org.apache.catalina.startup.Embedded for Tomcat 4.0) and create your own
      server-side objects.

The latter approach is also commonly used to embed Tomcat inside application servers (such
as the J2EE 1.2.1 SDK, which includes a modified version of Tomcat 3.0 -- and the 1.3 version
will include Tomcat 4.0).

You may also want to replace existing Tomcat components for logging, for example, to tie
in to your application's infrastructure.
