OK. This is a piece of the puzzle I didn't know.  Thanks.

Now, for the Tomcat gurus: Does this explain the error that I'm
getting?

Is Tomcat always going to croak on a request of this form? 
"GET http://dest.url/ HTTP/1.1" Or is there some way I can get a
pattern to match it so my servlet can handle it?
