But you don't have to use the database on the same box as the web server.

If it is the number of connections then you should consider using a
connection pool and limiting the max size of the pool.  The other thought is
to verify that each connection is being closed on correctly in your code.

I'm using the Oracle thin drivers (version 8.1.6)  I'm currently using the
Blackdown JDK 1.2.2 but may move to the beta of 1.3 from Sun (seen some
intersting performance numbers that might justify the move)
