The above ammendments to the Apache/Tomcat configuration do not appear to
work. The problem does not appear to be that apache is not mapping .xml
extensions to the Cocoon servlet because the exception stack trace is being
called from the correct class:

java.lang.NullPointerException
	at org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon.init(Cocoon.java:135)
	at
org.apache.tomcat.core.ServletWrapper.initServlet(ServletWrapper.java:315)
	at
org.apache.tomcat.core.ServletWrapper.handleRequest(ServletWrapper.java:445)
	at
org.apache.tomcat.core.ContextManager.service(ContextManager.java:559)
	at
org.apache.tomcat.service.connector.Ajp12ConnectionHandler.processConnection
(Ajp12ConnectionHandler.java:156)
	at
org.apache.tomcat.service.TcpConnectionThread.run(SimpleTcpEndpoint.java:338
)
	at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java)

So, the problem must lie with some other configuration problem. Yours...
