The build.xml has nothing to do with deploying a web app.
BTW, to write XML file you do not need to know anything about XML processing
etc, it's just a piece of formated and structurized info. You need to know
its grammar.

the simplest is

myweb\index.html
myweb\web-inf\web.xml

someone said that even web.xml is not a must
where you have no servlet or jsp
read the Servlet 2.2 specification ( about 1 h lecture )
