Been there, done that:

    A new revision of mySql introduced this problem.    There is
    a new version of mm.jdbc ....  that fixes this.

    HOWEVER:  After upgrading both mysql and mm.jdbc,
    everything "mostly" worked but for some of my database
    queries I would get a "Bad First Data Set" error.

    At this point in time, I went back to the slightly
    earlier version of mysql and mm.jdbc, and
    everything worked fine.
