Here's a handy way I use to check that the object is there.

<c:out value="${ checker }" />

If checker indeed references an object you should get some hex output 
as if you called toString() on the object like:

package.name.CheckerObject@45e66

If the class overrides toString() this probably wouldn't happen though.
