try overriding setPageContext(PageContext ctx) and check that it is being
invoked.

public void setPageContext(PageContext ctx) {
    System.out.println("Inside " + getClass().getName() +
".setPageContext()...");
    super.setPageContext(ctx);
}

That should settle any doubt that pageContext is being set.
