I am not bothered much, though

1) it need to have ASL header
2) it probably should be omitted from src distributions

I googled whether other projects have it, "gitignore site:svn.apache.org"
here is some random example:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/hadoop/mapreduce/branches/MR-279/.gitignore

What content will be in your version of the file?
