Dumb question. (More of a curiosity since I see this a lot)

Is there a reason to use:
java.io.File fd =
    new java.io.File(paths[j] +
                     System.getProperty("file.separator") + name);

Instead of
java.io.File fd = new java.io.File(paths[j], name);
