Urm, I think that they tried that already ;-).

Having a spare minute, tried this on 5.5.7 with a valid deployment descriptor, 
and to nobody's surprise Tomcat worked as expected.

As Remy so nicely tried to point out, if you want unpaid consulting help to 
fix your bugs, the place to look is tomcat-user.
