the current trimSpaces implementation is too eager to remove spaces.

frequently, whitespace in html IS significant - for instance:
"<img .../> some text here"
and
"<img .../>some text here"
will display differently.

the current trimSpaces implementation takes this:
"${bullet} some text here"
and turns it into
"${bullet}some text here"
which is not the right thing (tm)

freemarker seems to use much more sophisticated rules for white space
elimination, sure would be nice if tomcat could copy it for jsp.
