I can confirm that the following does _not_ solve the ThreadDeath exception 
when Tomcat reloads the context following a class compile.

import org.apache.log4j.LogManager;
import org.apache.commons.logging.LogFactory;

public void contextDestroyed(ServletContextEvent scE) {		
    LogManager.shutdown();
    LogFactory.releaseAll();
}
