It seems like, at some point, the Tomcat's error handling classes did something
like this:

[...]
} catch (Exception ex /* original application exception */) {
    throw new ServletException(ex.getMessage());
}

In this case, the stack trace of the original application exception caught is
lost, replaced by the ServletException's one.
