UTF8 is ok - it means ASCII characters are encoded with one byte, 
non-ASCII with more bytes. AFAIK JDK supports both UTF8 and UTF16, I'm not
sure about browsers.

In any case, the problem shouldn't be that.

Please check a simpler case, without the xml serializer.
