There is a lot of interest in optimizing it, but right now a lot of 
efforts go into integration with Apache - that gives performance,
HTTP/1.1, and all the apache features. 


I don't think it's a good ideea to use the "mini" web server for high load
or expect too much performance - it is a very good solution for "embeded"
tomcat ( tomcat inside another application, like an IDE or even hardware). 


Please also note that the current tomcat is development version, with 
a some debug info ( like println to console instead of log file - very
slow ), and no optimization.
