Neil, It seems that the approach to take would be to modify (or replace through inheritance) the link tag. This way you could eliminate the scriplet in your page and centralize your management of images too. I'm not sure that scriptlets are permitted inside jsp tags. The idea of the tag is that it replaces the scriptlet.
