It's served that way because you configured it in that way (you said nothing about your environment
and as I can see you use Eclipse). In normally packaged application there be no {{src/main/webapp}}
and {{src/main/java}} inside the war archive.

Do an experiment for me, run {{mvn package}}, check the {{target}} folder if there is a *.war
file. Extract it as it is a simple zip archive and check what you have in {{WEB-INF/classes}}.

What you pointed as bug it is not - there is a billions of applications which work perfectly
fine with the pointed code.
