I agree completely.  That discussion needs to be summarized into next steps.  There is a lot
of back and forth and based on a couple of pull requests, it is clear there is not consensus.
 If no one else gets to summarizing the various arguments, I will do it this week.

Until then, this fix will at least return the functionality that existed before.
