You're using Scala 2.11 with Spark right? I can reproduce it, and that's really strange. This
works, FWIW:

scala> class Test { val f = new java.io.File(".") }
defined class Test
{code}

I think the Scala 2.11 shell is now pretty much matching Scala's, so I'm surprised. I have
no idea but CC [~zsxwing] or [~jodersky] for a thought.
