I spent some time digging in the sources, then ran spamd in the foreground with "-D reporter"
to get the 
Razor2 output.  Razor2 was trying to use root's razor home "/root/.razor" even though it was
running as 
spamd.  It looks like it still had root's HOME envar.  I added "--username=spamd" and this
appears to 
have fixed the problem.  (I'll let you know if it comes back.)

However, this doesn't explain the bizarre error reportage from spamd in this case.
