This is a bug in the new archetype plugin in maven that was deployed last weekend.  See discussion at:

A new version should hopefully be coming shortly.


For a workaround, do:

mvn org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-archetype-plugin:1.0-alpha-7:create  .......

to lock down to the previous, working, version.
