Subject [jira] [Closed] (ROL-1958) Roller does not create its directory in /tmp automatically

Glen Mazza closed ROL-1958.
---------------------------

    Resolution: Incomplete

Hi Matthias, I don't know why you don't have a /tmp folder, but Linux distros should be creating
that for you by default (http://superuser.com/a/332616), which in turn is the temp directory
used by Java by default (http://stackoverflow.com/a/1924576) -- might you have deleted it
from your operating system thinking that you didn't need it?

It's not easy for Roller to just re-create this folder if missing, as it's unlikely to be
running with the proper permissions to be able to do so; also as this is such a rare circumstance,
I don't think it's worth the effort or even our responsibility to restore system directories
that a user may have deleted. Any Linux distro missing a /tmp folder may have other severe
problems with it, Roller failing under such a circumstance instead of silently recovering--indicating
to the operator there's a problem with OS--may not be such a bad thing anyway.

> I had a problem with my roller installation. When I uploaded files (e.g. images), Roller
did neither generate a thumbnail nor did detect the image size (-1 x -1 Pixel was shown).
> Debugging the problem I found out, that roller did try to handle the image in /tmp/tomcat7-tomcat7-tmp/
which did not exist.

> Creating the directory manually fixed the problem for me.
> I think it would be best if the directory would get created automatically (which should
be possible). Else it should get documented in the installation guide, that a temporary directory
has to be created
