My system only has the .so version. Not sure what the right solution is for you. 
You could try adding -Bdynamic, or use -l/lib/libuuid.so.1 to force the path 
just to get it built. Obviously some change to configure.ac or Makefile.am is 
needed to fix this properly but not sure what.
