I am saying that if you have action event, and then you do this:

rundata.setMessage
redirect (either via a forward or jslink), the message gets cleared

thus I have to use another approach than rundata.setMessage

Yes, but there are two problems with that:
1. THe user code is expected to do the translation, instead of just using an abstract msgid
2. The actual messages are usually a lot longer than the msg id
