Thanks.

Just for closure, this is how I got it working.  My steps are as 
follows...

1.  Export the slides to PNG.
2.  Create a very basic xsl-fo document.
3.  Run the xsl-fo through FOP to convert to a PDF.

Pretty simple once you think about it.
