Formatting part of the string is called rich text in Excel which doesn't 
quite work in HSSF (particulars are discussed in this list).

Is this reproducible on a plain-ole java program? ie. no weird 
servlet/transfer variables?  If it's reproducible, please provide test 
case etc to bugzilla.
