Thanks Nick.  I'm reading this.  This looks very helpful.  To others:
For me at least the font was really bad (maybe it doesn't embed the font 
in the PDF and it is picking an unfortunate font on Ubuntu?), if you 
paste the link into google it converts it to html and uses a nicer font.
