For #6. I changed Phoenix to send() and clear() the mutation state after each batch. But when
I then commit I see only the very first batch gets committed. Need to look at the code more.

The write to the commit table is not much the problem - only for very small transactions would
the extra roundtrip matter. The performance penalty seems to be proportional to the number
of rows being committed.
