    It looks like you had dropped this logic completely. Is there a reason we don't need it
or was it unintentional?
    
    Ultimately, we'd want to make sure that if this script is killed/interrupted that it would
also terminate the Java program it spawns. I'm not sure how subprocess would handle this now
(and if it was even necessary).
