loc_id is a CHAR column

{code:sql}select (loc_id) from dept{code}
{code:sql}select UPPER(loc_id) from dept{code}
{code:sql}select LOWER(loc_id) from dept{code}

The first returns an unpadded string as expected. The others returns a padded string
