Sounds like functional indexes, implemented in PHOENIX-514 described a bit here: http://phoenix.apache.org/secondary_indexing.html#Functional_Indexes.
This should work for local indexes too. I'm still not sure I understand what you're referring
to. Is this a duplicate of that work?
