Attached patch against master. 

Unit test pass and I ran the HashJoinIT with no errors. Let me know if there's something else I can try to test this change.

If this change is good we don't need PHOENIX-1232, we can close it as Later or Not a Problem, I don't think alternatives to snappy compression are needed at this time.
