Yeah, that confirms my thinking.

I mean balancers -> front-end -> balancers -> back-end.

Using different IPs on the balancers for front/back.

It was supposed to work that way originally, but we never got round to 
implementing it once we discovered mod_proxy_balancer in Apache 2.2.
