Checked in as r169826, should have thought of this a long time ago, actually.
Now we are back to where we were before, with the 'redefined' warnings but
no segfaults. Definitely better.

Yup, will at least document it exists ;-) And really, the reason it's broken
is because we cache GV's ;-)
